A robbery at our Wollaton shop will cost thousands to repair.

Update: Wollaton reopened its doors on Wednesday 4 December 2024.

On Tuesday 28 November 2024, we were shocked to discover that thieves had broken into our Community Shop in Wollaton. The theft, cost of repairs and temporary closure of the shop will have a huge impact on Nottinghamshire Hospice ahead of the festive season.

The importance of shops for care

As a charity, every opportunity to save and raise money is vital – ensuring local people get the care they deserve when they die. Profits from our Community Shops go straight to funding our three care services: Wellbeing, Hospice in Your Home and Bereavement Support.

Shops are also a valuable social hub for local people and volunteers, providing green and affordable ways to shop.

Loss and damages

Thieves took cash and electrical items, but the losses go much further than this.

Our front door was pulled off its hinges, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage. Repairs will be costly, but also take time. The shop will be closed until the damage can repaired, so the cost of the break-in includes lost sales during closure as well.

This is a huge blow ahead of the festive season, which is a key time for raising even more funds.

Door of shop ripped open and shattered

“Absolutely devastated”

Paula Watkins, Retail Operations Manager at Nottinghamshire Hospice, said: “The theft and damage at Wollaton has many repercussions for us as a charity. Instead of making profit for our care services, we’ll be left out of pocket as we fund repairs.

“If anyone knows anything about the break-in, they can call the local police with information. Or, donations to the Hospice’s Light Up A Life appeal will be greatly appreciated.”

Lorne Brooks, Community Shop Manager at Wollaton added: “I’m absolutely devastated. Our shop is a huge part of the community; our shoppers love to buy presents and outfits here ahead of Christmas, knowing their money could go towards the care of local people.

“I’m so grateful for everyone’s support and well wishes. I look forward to opening our doors for our amazing customers and volunteers again soon.”

How you can help

The winter is always a vital time for raising funds here at Nottinghamshire Hospice. If you’re unable to shop at Wollaton because of its temporary closure, you can still support our care by giving to our Light Up A Life appeal.

Or, head to another one of our shops where you can donate goods and grab a bargain.
