Hospice volunteer given national recognition

Our very own Jean has received an award from the League Of Mercy Foundation!

Jean was nominated for a national award from the League of Mercy by her fellow volunteers and our Volunteer Support Team. She volunteers at our Community Shop in West Bridgford and has supported the Hospice since 2004 – two decades of hard work!

“I feel honoured”

The nominations were made for her commitment, flexibility, positive attitude and polite nature, all of which make her a fantastic person to volunteer with. Jean has specialised in jewellery during her time in West Bridgford and will often research items donated to the shop. She also has made lots of friends – many of whom pop by the shop simply to catch up with her.

When talking about volunteering and receiving the award, Jean said: “After I left full-time work, I wanted to continue to volunteer. West Bridgford has always had plenty of charity shops. I chose the Hospice because of the friendly welcome I received.  I have been a volunteer at the shop for so many years, so I was quite astonished that I had been chosen to receive this prestigious award. I didn’t realise that you could be rewarded for something you love doing.

I have made many friends since volunteering at the shop. People come in and tell me about their experiences and how they have been helped by the hospice.

I would like to thank everyone who had a hand in putting my name forward for the award. I feel honoured.”

The League Of Mercy

The League of Mercy was established in 1899 and exists to honour and celebrate the work of volunteers across the country.

Lord Lingfield, President of the League of Mercy, says: “We believe that it is vital to recognise and honour the work of volunteers. By doing so we may develop public awareness of their work and encourage others to join them in giving up their time to the voluntary care of those in need.”
