Bereavement Support

We offer support for your grieving process, whether that’s post-diagnosis or after death.

Bereavement image

If you’ve been affected by a palliative diagnosis, or the expected death of someone close to you, and your GP is in Nottinghamshire, then we may be able to help you. Our care is person-centred and non-judgemental – it’s simply a safe space to be heard.

There’s no right or wrong way to approach grief, and everyone deals with things differently. After a bereavement, you may feel a need to talk to someone entirely outside the situation, and that’s why we’re here.

Free bereavement and emotional support

All our services are free. If you’re not referred by a healthcare professional, you can refer yourself by calling 0115 962 1222. Our friendly team will take your details for a member of our bereavement team to arrange an initial assessment

This gives you an opportunity to talk through what is going on and get an idea of the type and level of support you might find helpful. If you then decide you’d like ongoing support, we’ll arrange this at a mutually convenient time.

Emotional Support

Our trained volunteers offer a listening ear and an understanding of the ways bereavement may affect you.

Emotional support is provided weekly for up to 12 sessions. This can be provided in person at the hospice, or over the telephone.

Counselling

Counselling is provided by qualified counsellors, and those in the late stages of their training. If you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or are dealing with more complex or difficult issues, you will usually be offered counselling.

Counselling is offered for up to 12 weekly sessions which can take place face-to-face at the Hospice, by telephone, or online.

Bereavement Support Groups

These free sessions offer an opportunity for bereaved people to meet and share experiences with others in a similar situation, with staff from our team and volunteers on hand. These are predominantly social support groups so may not be suitable for those who are very newly bereaved, or who might struggle with listening to other people talking about their own grief.
